Chapter Twelve
Predictions: 1) Ira will go and get another dog.
2) Haven and Ira will be in a huge fight.
3) All of the hens will be dead.
Questions: 1) Why does Haven think that Pinky might be barren?
2) Why don' they eat all of the squirrel?
3) Why does Haven not go see a doctor to make sure he doesn't have an affection?
Clarifications: I do get this chapter. At first it starts off a bit normal talking about their daily lives. But then at the end it gets a bit more interesting. For example how Haven starts telling Robert that he will soon have to be the man and take care of his mother and Aunt Carrie because he might haven an affection and he will no longer be around.
Connections: 1) I have had to grow up as a kid. I had to learn how to cook and how to take care of my brother at a young age, just in case.
Summary: Pinky finally arrives home. Robert starts talking to her about her being the Best Be-Haves Pig in Vermont but of course she pays no attention to him. Mother then goes tells Robert to go get a squirrel for dinner and he does. He waits in the tress for a while but then finally gets one. He takes it home and cuts its stomach open to get out the pauch. After that he goes to the hens and just feed them the rest of the squirrel. Haven comes over to Robert and starts talking to him. Later then mom calls them in so they can have dinner. When having dessert they had a chocolate cake and Aunt Carrie sprinkled the nutmeat onto the cake. After dinner mom and Aunt Carrie started talking and Robert and Haven were together. Robert then started to tell Haven that he couldn't wait til he got working so that he could buy himself a coat. Haven then began to say that when he became a man, and after that he said that would happen soon. Robert was confused and Haven then told him that he had an affection and that soon he will have to take care of mom and Aunt Carrie because they were getting old and they can't take care of the farm. Haven also said that he shouldn't leave school and he should still get an education. Haven then told Robert not to tell mom or Aunt Carrie.
