Plot line:
Characterization:
Napoleon: Napoleon is an Round, and Dynamic character. He is a dynamic character because from the start ever since Old Major had died he has wanted to be the leader since the beginning showing that he wanted to be the boss and control everything around him. For example when he kicked out Snowball he had leadership since that day and changed everything. He is the a very tough pig. He tries to intimidate the other animals in the farm making it seem like he has all the power and the other animals can't do or say anything to him. He is also a round character because throughout the book he doesn't seem to care about the other animals just him and the dogs. For example he, the pigs and the dogs are getting a better life than the rest of the animals. Showing that the other animals don't matter.
|
Snowball: Snowball is a Round, Static character. He is round because after Old Major died, Snowball took charge. He is intelligent, passionate about what he does, and less like Napoleon. For example when they have the meetings he know what he is talking about. When they had the meeting about beginning to build the windmill. It was a really good idea, it could really help the farm in many ways. He knew this could really help. He is also a static character too. For example before the dogs attacked him and he left he seemed the same. And nothing really changed. And when he left he was really never heard of really that much. |
Boxer: He is a Round and Dynamic character. He is a round character because the book really tells what he is like. He is huge and really strong. He really isn't all that smart but he always says he'll work harder. For example after he got badly injured in the battle and wasn't all that good he still worked his hardest on rebuilding the windmill. He is a dynamic character because he kinda has developed over the book. He is strong but not smart. But continues his life. For example at the beginning all we really knew was that he was really strong and no brains but when they get to the point of building the windmill he tells the animals that he basically wants to achieve something before he retires because he was getting to that age in life but he never made it because he died in the end.
|
Squealer: Squealer is a Flat and Static character. He is a flat character because we don't really know much about him. All I really know is that he is there when the pigs are there. For example after Napoleon took after and was making orders, Squealer was telling the animals that he would make a really leader and that is good for the farm. He basically is there to back up Napoleon. He is a static character because he doesn't change over the course of this book. Like I said before in any time he appeared in the book all I really felt was that he was just still there backing up Napoleon.

Picture Method:
Chapter 1
Predictions: 1)It will start off talking about animals. 2) They will soon start talking to one another. Questions: 1) Why is Mr. Jones so grouchy? 2) Why is the pig telling everyone that man are evil? 3) Is he trying to convince the animals to go against the humans? Connections: 1) As a kid my mom would sing me a song to fall asleep. But I don't remember all the words. 2) I know people that have a barn. 3) I used to own a donkey,. They are so uncomfortable to ride on. Clarifications: I really don't understand this first chapter. I feel like it just started off weird, with the animals talking and the pig seeming kind of rude and thinking that he runs the barn because he's the oldest animal in the barn. I don't know, it doesn't really make sense to me. Summary: Mr. Jones forgets to lock up his barn. When Mr. Jones goes off the animals just go where ever and Old Major starts to give them a speech. Old Major is a boar. He starts talking to them about how he might be leaving soon and wanting to leave then with some of this wisdom. He than starts telling them that animals are born to be slaves and to work for the humans. That they can only do certain things. Then Old Major tells them about a dream that he had and about a song that he remembered as a child. He sung it to the farm and the rest of the animals enjoyed it and sang it five times. At the end of the chapter the animals fall asleep. |
Chapter 2
Prediction: 1) Old Major will die soon. 2) There will be another tragedy at the barn. Questions: 1) Who will take over now that the Old Major died? 2) Why did the pigs take over? 3) Why didn't Mr. Jones feed them before he went drinking? Connections: 1) I know someone that died while they were sleeping. It was a very sad day. 2) My cousin is the one to always lie about what he does. It gets so annoying that you don't even know what's true and what isn't. Clarifications: I don't understand this chapter. Even though Old Major died and the pigs took over, I feel like this went a bit to fast. And also about the commandments why did they make them? Was it because they wanted to set rules so that animals won't break them. This chapter is just confusing to me. Summary: Three days later Old Major dies while he is sleeping. The rest of the farm meets every once in awhile for the past three months so they can plan out the pig's wish of wresting control of the farm from Mr. Jones. Basically Old Major's jobs goes to two pigs named Napoleon and Snowball. They than form a philosophy called Animalism. While talking with the animals he comes Moses the raven that starts talking about Sugarcandy Mountain. Which is a place where animals go when they die. They pigs then try to make the stories that Moses tells are false. One day Mr. Jones go drinking and forgets to fed the animals and it was to hard so the cows break into the store shed and begin to eat. When Mr. Jones returned and saw the cows eat he beat them. The cows then start attacking the humans. Chasing them around. At the end they begin to sing the "Beasts of England". The pigs come up with 7 commandments and put them on the side of the barn. |
Chapter 3
Predictions: 1) Mr. Jones will sell the cows. 2) The animals will turn violet towards people. Questions: 1) Why did they say that animals with 2 legs are stupid? 2) Why didn't the pigs work? Connections: 1) I had trouble as a id learning the alphabet because I sucked at English. 2) I've had to work in the summer really hard and that is something tough. 3) I have been made fun of because of my skin color and them think I couldn't make it far. Clarifications: I do and don't understand this chapter. I don't understand it because I felt like it went from one thing to another. For example at the beginning they talked about harvesting, then into learning how to read and write. And at the end how the dogs had puppies and then how pigs had to drink milk and eat apple. I felt it was all over the place. Summary: The animals spend the summer harvesting in the field. The pigs are thinking of ways that the other animals can use the human tools to work. On Sundays they hold a flag-raising ceremony. The green on the flag represents the fields of England, and the white the hoof and horn symbolize the animals. Snowball establishes committees but most fail to accomplish their aims. They also do classes that will help the animals read and write. At the end of summer all the animals achieve the ability to read and write. The pigs are very fluent in both. But some not that much. As Snowball says, "Four legs good, two legs bad." meaning that the animals with four legs are better then the ones with two legs. The pigs need mike and apples to make their brains work well if they lack them Mr. Jones might come back and they don't want that. |
Chapter 4
Prediction: 1) Soon Mr. Jones will come back. 2) The animals will become crazy. 3) Soon every farm will be run by animals. Questions: 1) Why do Mr. P and Mr. F hate each other? 2) Why does Mr. Jones take some of the other farmers men? 3) How come Boxer feels guilty he killed someone? 4) What was the whole even about? Connections: 1) I have gotten into a fight before but I didn't start it. So therefore it was not my fault. 2) I always feel guilty when I do bad things. 3) I'm the kind of person to spread rumors of people I dislike. Clarifications: I do understand this chapter because I get why the other farmers would talk bad about Mr. Jones. He's mean and needs to get checked. I also get how they would have anniversaries to celebrate things they have achieved or want to remember. Summary: Mr. Jones lives in Willingdon. And Mr. P and Mr. F don't want his animals to be like Mr. Jones's animals. They quickly speared rumors on how Mr. Jones farm is inefficient. The animals start to sing Beast of England because of pigeons sent by Snowball to cause rebellion. The pigeons start to tell Snowball that Mr. Jones and a few of Mr. p and Mr. F's mean are marching with him on the field. They start to attack and Boxer kills someone and he starts to feel gulity but they tell him the humans are better dead. They find Mr. Jones gun in the mud and said that they will shoot it twice a year. One day on the anniversary of the Battle of Cowshed and Midsummer's Day the anniversary of the Rebellion. |
Chapter 5
Predictions: 1) They will kill the animals. 2) The pigs will soon have no control. 3) The animals will escape the farm. Questions: 1) Did Snowball die when the dogs chased him? 2) Why does Napoleon always argue with Snowball? 3) Why was Mollie never on task? Connections: 1) I always get places late or never stay on task. It's kinda hard. 2)I get into so many arguments with my brother it's like World War 3! 3) I got chased by a small dog in Mexico and I was terrified because it wouldn't leave me alone. Clarifications: I somewhat understand this chapter because I feel like at the beginning they never mention Mollies name because she basically betray them. And also I understand how Napoleon want to take over and not let Snowball control everything. But at then end he does go with the windmill plan because its a good idea. Summary: Mollie becomes different. Not arriving at work on time. Excepting things from other animals and even left and the animals never mentioned her name again. Snowball and Napoleon like always, arguing. As for Snowball he is thinking of ways to improve the farm. And looks through Mr. Jones book and wants to build a windmill that could generate energy and other farming tasks. Napoleon basically thinks this is a bad idea because it requires lots of hard work and time. While Snowball is giving his speech about the windmill, 9 dogs charge in and attack Snowball chasing him out of the barn. Napoleon takes over and says that all the important decisions will be made by the pigs. Squealer tells the animals that Napoleon is just taking over the leadership and what not. At the end Napoleon does accept the windmill plan |
Chapter 6
Predictions: 1) The windmill with became a mess. 2) Animals with start to leave. 3) The farm will get destroyed. Questions: 1) Why do they believe Snowball knocked the top off? 2) How come the pigs can be the only ones to sleep on beds? 3) Why would they hire someone if they're not real humans that can pay with money? Connections: 1) I've been through a storm before. Even though it didn't knock anything from the house it sure was nasty outside after the storm left. 2) I work just as hard like Boxer. In school and when I work. I don't slack off. Clarifications: I understand this chapter because I feel like they are trying their best to get the farm moving and to finish the windmill at the same time. I also understand why Napoleon might think Snowball had something to do with the windmill because he feels like Snowball want to bring them down after what had happened. Summary: The animals would work at a backbreaking pace so they can farm food for themselves and also the build the windmill. Squealer starts talking to the animals telling them that they will not get food only on sundays. Boxer works his hardest and basically does the work of three horses. As time goes by the windmill is becoming for difficult to build. They have plenty food but what they are starting to run out of is supplies for the windmill and Napoleon hires Mr. Whymper to trade on behalf of Animal Farm. Pigs start living in the farmhouse and there have been some rumors going on saying that they are sleeping in beds. Disobeying the commandments. Squealer then goes on saying that pigs need comfortable repose to they can think clearly and give their best to the farm. Then comes a storm and knocks off the top part of the windmill. Napoleon tells them it was Snowball that did it and he wished Animal Farm the worst. He offers a bushel of apples get him Snowball. |
Chapter 7
Predictions: 1) Snowball comes back. 2) The windmill will get done. 3) Boxer will get sick. 4) Mr. Whymper will stop helping Animal Farm trade. Questions: 1) Where is Snowball? 2) Why did the hens rebel? 4) Why would the dogs attack Boxer for no reason? 5) Did Snowball really sell himself? Connections: 1) I've seen a hen die. It's weird because they just lay there all weird looking. 2) I know people that always try to take control of a situation but never do because they aren't much of a leader. Clarifications: I understand this chapter because its basically starting to show the real Napoleon and how he wants to take over the whole farm. Even though Boxer might not see he still wants to work harder. Summary: The winter comes and the farm is running out of food. The animals are also struggleing to rebuild the windmill. The animals admire Boxers hard work. In order for Napoleon to feed the animals he plans to sell about 400 eggs a week. The hens start to rebel and than 9 of them die. The animals start to hear that Snowball comes to the farm during the night. Napoleon starts to say that he can detect is footprints and if something goes wrong they blame it on Snowball. They start to say that Snowball sold himself to Mr. Frederick and Pichfield's farm. Squealer goes on talking about Napoleon's bravery and they way he leads. Days past and Napoleon with his 9 dogs on his side tries to get some animals to tell him that they are working with Snowball and the dogs would attack them. Four even attacked Boxer but didn't come close because he pushed them away with his strength. Napoleon then leaves. The animals start to sing Beasts of England but Squealer tells them to stop because that song is only for rebelling. So than Squealer gives them a new song to sing. |
Chapter 8
Predictions: 1) The new song will be removed. 2) They will try to get rid of Napoleon 3) The whole farm will just fall apart. Questions: 1) Why would he give Napoleon something else instead of the money. 2) Why didn't the animals suspect anything when they found Squealer at the barn with the paintbrush? 3) Did Squealer die or is he still alive? Connections: 1) I gotten tricked before. I was doing a job for a neighbor and though they would at least pay me money but no they paid me with candy. And not even good candy. 2) I fell off a leader one time. But one of those baby toy leaders. Not the adult ones, I'm not that dumb. Clarifications: I understand this chapter because I see why the animals did certain things. For example when the men blew up the windmill they attacked them because they were mad and because of all the effort they had put in it. Also when they were rebuilding it, it gave them motivation. Summary: The animals discover that one of the commandments says something different. Commandant meant number 6 was changed and it now says, "No animal shall kill any other animal without cause." But the animals think it has always said that. Later through the year the animals work harder to rebuild the windmill even though they are starving and it is really cold. Napoleon becomes leader now. The pigs start to tell the animals to hate Mr. Frederick or Mr. Pilkington. Whichever farm is out of is out of favor than Snowball should be hidden there. Mr. Frederick is the one to buy the timber at the end. And Napoleon now has five-pounds. The animals are getting closer to finishing the windmill. Napoleon than comes to realize that the money Mr. Frederick gave him was a stack of forgeries. Napoleon than warns the farm to except the worst and this is what happens. Mr. F comes and attacks the farm with a huge group of men. The men blow up the windmill. While the animals are attacking to men several die and Boxer gets injured really bad. The next morning the pigs look sick. And there is a rumor going on say thing Napoleon might be dying. But he gets better. The animals find Squealer near the barn, he had fallen and had a paintbrush in his hand and he was getting ready to change another commandment but the animals didn't think that. |
Chapter 9
Predictions: 1) Boxer will die. 2) Napoleon will die sooner or later. 3) There will no longer be no Animal Farm. Questions: 1) Why did Animal Farm become republic? 2) Why were they going to take Boxer to a glue maker. 3) How come Animal hasn't fallen apart yet? 4) Was Snowball with Jones the whole time? Connections: 1) I always work hard even when I know I can't get far. It just motivates me. 2) I know people that have had a bad winter with out any heat and barley any food to support their families. Clarifications: I understand this chapter. It is making a bit more sense to me now. Even though it is cold and they're weak from not eating they are still motivated to work hard on the windmill and finish it. And also I understand why Boxer stilled worked even though he was hurt really bad. He wanted to actually accomplish something before is time was up. Summary: The animals are all so weak right now but that doesn't stop them from building it again. Even though Boxer is still injured he is still trying his hardest when working. He is soon to that age were he can finally rest but he won't until he sees the windmill down and ready to go. Food grows scares and it is given to the animals except for the pigs and the dogs. Napoleon brings order events called Spontaneous Demonstrations. And the animals have to march around the farm and hear speeches. Animal Farm and declares it a republic and Napoleon becomes president. One day while working Boxer collapses and the animals call for help. They want to get him to a human hospital but when they come back Boxer is already to go to go get slaughtered. At the end Boxer does die. And Napoleon does give a speech. |
Chapter 10
Predictions: 1) The whole farm will die. No more animals will live. 2) There will no one left in the world. Questions: 1) Why did they forget about the Rebellion? 2) What happened to all the commandments? 3) Where the pigs the only ones that became into humans? 4) Are the other farmers going to feed their animals less food so they can work harder? 5) Whatever happened to Snowball. Connections: 1)I have forgotten about important things but they come and go. I have very bad memory. 2) I have broken the rules and have changed things before. I guess they never really pay attention to it so they never notice. Clarifications: I understand this chapter because it just tells everything. For example the animals achieve their goals in building the windmill. And at the end I feel like the animals turned into humans because they pigs didn't like the humans and the way they acted. So they turned into something they hated. Summary: Years have passed and some animals had die. They had rebuild the windmill, but they don't use it for electricity they use to for milling corn. Even though the farm gets better, the pigs and dogs are basically the ones living the life. Animal Farm still believe in the goals of the Rebellion, were there is a world without humans and animals are equal. Squealer takes some sheeps because he was gonna teach them a new chant. But they then hear Clover and they came to her. Squealer was walking to them on his hind legs and so does Napoleon. The sheep began to chant, "Four legs good, two legs better!" Clover than ask Benjamin to read her the commandments and there weren't any, the only thing on there said, " All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than others." The pigs are basically doing everything that the 7 commandments said not to do. Napoleon changes the farm to its original name: Manor Farm. At the end the pigs turn into humans. |
Themes
The Societal Tendency Toward Class Stratification: This is like establishing classes in the farm. For example when they had wrote the commandments and after Snowball had left, it all changed. Pigs were at the top and got whatever they asked for like the milk, apples, and sheets when sleeping in bed. And leaving the animals at the bottom, making them work hard and basically starving them.
|
The Abuse of Language as Instrumental to the Abuse of Power: The pigs are keeping the animals in the dark making them work really hard on this windmill over and over. And the pigs are just "working really hard" like Squealer but that's not true because they really don't do much at all. Just seem to always tell the animals what they should do. And also they are abusing the fact the animals can't read and remember things clearly so they have the opportunity to change everything making it seem like it was always there but they just forgot about it.
|
The Corruption of Socialist Ideals in the Soviet Union: Animal Farm is a bit like the Russian Revolution. For example Mr. Jones is basically unnumbered with the animals and basically hands the power to the pigs. Just like Soviet Union, the pigs establish themselves as the top class in the farm. For example when Napoleon tried to get the animals to tell him something that he knew was not true, was showing that he can control them and they can't do anything.
|
Motifs
Songs: This whole book is filled with songs, poems, and slogans. For example the "Beast of England" was song mostly everyday after Old Major shared it with them. And the slogan the pigs told the animals "Four legs good. Two legs bad" these helps the pigs evoke the animals and their nobility. All of these make the animals think that they are getting closer to getting there freedom.
|
Battle of Cowshed: This battle showed the strength of the animals when they work together. It shows the humans that even though they're animals they have the ability to fight back and know what they want gain from it. The animals started to hate the humans too because of Mr. Jones and the way he treated them and also how Napoleon was telling them how they were bad.
|
Control: It seems that throughout the book the pigs have wanted to take control of the farm. Especially Napoleon. He just wanted to become the leader in everything. Like the windmill getting build, him trying to get the hens to lay certain amount of eggs to sell every week, and eating food that could help the other animals like the milk and apples. But that didn't matter.
|
Symbols
Animal Farm: The Animal Farm stands for Russia and the Soviet Union. And also any human society. The Animal Farm is like a country really is had its governor which are the pigs, a back up force, dogs taking that place and the working people which would be the rest of the animals. The farm basically symbolizes that it works just like the real world. You have the power at the top and the people with barely any control at the bottom.
|
Tone(s)
Outrageous: This book has some outrageous stuff. For example when the animals fought with the humans. That seem outrageous because in real life that would have never happened because there is not way the animals would have beat the humans. And also making the animals work for hours on a really hard job in the cold and basically starving is just ridiculous. They should have been feed good.
|
Mood(s)
Sad: Now that is get to the end of the book things just get depressing. For example when Boxer dies. He was a hard worker that just wanted to achieve something and then he dies and the pigs make it seem like they took him to the doctor but they didn't. And also its sad to see that the pigs turn into humans at the end because humans don't deserve that the pigs should have just died from all the things they have done.
