Chapter One
Predictions: 1) This story with be about a kid and his family and how strong their Shaker life is.
2) There will be a pig involved with the family.
Questions: 1) Why would Robert stick his hand into the cows mouth to remove the goiter?
2) Why was he the one helping the cow give birth instead of the cow's owner?
3) Why does Edward make fun of Robert, if he knows that he's a Shaker?
Clarification: This first chapter really doesn't make since to me. I don't understand what Robert helping a cow give birth to her calf's has to do anything with it, but it's the first chapter so anything can happen.
Connections: 1) I have be bitten by a dog before , it was not the same as a cow biting your arm and breaking it but it really hurt and I was in so much pain.
2) I have helped some one chocking on food when they where eating. All I really did was just hit them on the back and it worked. It's almost the same as when Robert was helping Apron when she had something in her throat.
3) As a little girl I would get picked on because I really couldn't speak enough English and if I did it wasn't the best.
Summary: Robert is walking home just thinking to himself, how much he would like to fight with Edward Thatcher. He's a kid that picked on Robert because of the way he dresses. But instead of fighting him, he just runs off home. When going home he hears a sound and notices that it's Apron. His neighbors cow. He runs to her and notices that she is having a trouble giving birth to her calf. So he takes off his pants and wraps one of the pant legs around the calf's head to pull it out. But Apron runs off and drags him through thorn bushes. So he ties the other pant leg to a tree so when Apron ran off again the calf would come out. But she doesn't move, so he kicks her in the udder. She runs, and finally the calf comes out. All bloody and gross all over Robert, covering him all over. Suddenly, Apron starts gasping for air, so Robert thinks she is chocking on something ans sticks his hand down her throat and feels a hard ball. He tries to rip it out by Apron bites him and beings to run. While she is running she keeps hitting him and eventually Robert gets knocked out.
